A New Year, A New Call to Action for Environmental Justice

Nicole Jackson (She/Her/Hers)

As we welcome 2025, I want to share some thoughts on the urgency of our work in the face of recent anti-environmental justice actions. I recently received an insightful email from Dr. Sacoby Wilson, Executive Director at CEEJH, Inc., that perfectly encapsulated the challenges we face today. His words reinforce a simple truth: these actions demand a robust, strategic response from all of us in the EJ community. This is a pivotal moment, and our path forward must be guided by determination and innovative thinking.

Lighting the Way Forward

We must engage in more than press releases and dynamic social media campaigns. We must create impactful and effective communication tools that highlight opportunities to honor the legacy of environmental justice leaders and amplify our community’s voice. Work with your community to create short, powerful video messages from community members who experience these challenges firsthand. These stories will not only humanize our struggle but also serve as beacons of hope and resilience, reminding us that advancing environmental justice is both urgent and achievable.

From Awareness to Action

To further our impact, I propose that organizations host a series of virtual sessions to unpack the implications of recent executive orders, providing community members and stakeholders with a clear understanding of the policy changes and their immediate challenges. Then, join CEEJH Inc. at the 2025 Environmental Justice Symposium, where we’ll shift our focus from awareness to tangible solutions and resources. Stay engaged with tools like the Harvard Salata Institute’s Environmental Justice Dataverse (type “EJ Tools” in the search bar)—complete with extensive federal datasets on environmental justice and community health—as well as accessing a copy of EPA’s Title VI civil rights docket. Plus, Harvard’s Environmental and Energy Law Program’s Federal EJ Tracker will offer real-time updates on federal policy shifts, ensuring that we all stay informed and ready to act.

Embracing Our Resilience

Our community has never been a stranger to overcoming systemic barriers. Time after time, we have turned adversity into progress and refused to accept limitations imposed by those who would keep us from reaching our full potential. That indomitable spirit drives us today, inspiring us to move forward with conviction and determination. By working together and leveraging our collective strengths, we can amplify our impact and ensure that every community is part of this ongoing movement for environmental justice.

Join the Movement

As we stand at this critical juncture, let us shine a light on not only the challenges we face but also on the unwavering strength and resolve of those who persist. I invite you to join us in galvanizing a movement that remains steadfast, innovative, and resolute. Let’s use this new year as a springboard to inspire change, empower communities, and build a more just and sustainable future for all.

In solidarity and purpose,

Nicole Jackson
